There is a genuine concern amongst some people with epilepsy when it comes to dating — "What happens if I have a seizure during this date?"

It’s easy for negative thoughts to surface, leading to increased anxiety when discussing epilepsy or worrying about how others might perceive it.

Stigma surrounding epilepsy makes it even more challenging for individuals with epilepsy to find acceptance and understanding in the dating world.

Whether you’re dating or not, take the time to educate yourself about epilepsy this National Epilepsy Awareness month. Ask questions, listen attentively. If you are dating someone with epilepsy, by understanding their needs, concerns, and triggers, you can foster an environment of trust and understanding.

Join in #EpilepsyAwareness this month— You don't need to know someone with it, to get familiar with it.

Epilepsy affects millions of people worldwide, but
Epilepsy affects millions of people worldwide, but unfortunately, many individuals living with this condition still encounter prejudices when it comes to employment opportunities.

Some of today’s employers have unfounded concerns about safety, reliability, and/or productivity when it comes to epilepsy.

The flow on effect of such concerns is damaging — leading to biases during hiring processes and career progression.

Seizures should never define a person's capabilities, dedication, or potential contributions in the workplace. So it's essential for us to challenge these misconceptions and foster inclusive workplaces that embrace diversity.

Join in #EpilepsyAwareness this month— You don't need to know someone with it, to get familiar with it. Share this insight with your network.

Caregivers of people with epilepsy play a vital role in their loved ones' lives however it’s not uncommon for them to experience feelings of stress, social isolation, and guilt within this role.*

Research on the effects of epilepsy on caregivers and families is relatively sparse — particularly for caregivers of adults with epilepsy — but of what research there is it’s often reported that the caregiver role takes a toll on overall quality of life.

Even though caregivers have often witnessed hundreds of seizures and know exactly what to do, seizures still generate stress.

Some research calls for action on the recognition and normalisation of caregiver stress and the inclusion of caregivers in the physicians' patient treatment plan.**

Everyone’s recovery from seizures is different — sometimes it means dealing with physical injuries, sometimes it involves cognitive recovery. It is also not uncommon for people to experience exhaustion, forgetfulness, anxiety, or sadness after a seizure.

The reality is that balancing work responsibilities while managing ongoing seizures can be a demanding undertaking.

It is essential to acknowledge the necessity of taking time off from work for people recovering from seizures.

Our awareness and understanding of this reality, and compassion towards someone experiencing this, goes a long way in their recovery.
